PCAC 60th Annual Show -- July 14 - 25, 2010
Unlocking Creativity Since 1950
Sixty years ago, a group of local artists who knew each other from the Milford Garden Club decided to hold an art show. Two of these founding members continue to exhibit their work with us. In fact, Matilda Grech continues to teach a weekly watercolor class at Borough Hall, 109 West Catharine St, where most PCAC classes are held. Her students come from far and wide in order to consult and to study with this master teacher-artist.
Some of the magnificent paintings by Charter Member Harriet Cotterill are on display in the Artery. Her daughter Libby heads our Hospitality Committee each year – a truly daunting job.
The unofficial leader in 1950 was Georgiana P. Kiger. Her son William Kiger continues to nurture and nourish this organization that was so much a part of the Kigers’ lives and that has since grown to become an integral part of the cultural life of the region. The artists of PCAC cherish our past, live in the present joy of creativity, and think forward to the future.
What does PCAC do? In a word, we “encourage.” We try to encourage a spirit of volunteerism even among non-artists. We encourage an aesthetic sense in the community – consider the PCAC Milford Trash Can Project, which is done by high school students as well as by adult artists. Finally, we encourage artists to share their work and to grow because of it, regardless of their professional backgrounds, ages, levels of talent, media, or tastes.
About two-thirds of our members earn their livelihoods as professional artists and crafters. Hence, in the July Show you’ll see museum-caliber work near beginners’ best efforts. All are important expressions, whether those specific expressions are well-developed masterpieces or merely courageous symbols of an acceptance of a personal challenge to express something visually.
All art needs three components: a Creator, a Creation, and an Audience. Please enjoy your part in the creative process. –ecm
